Built to serve hundreds of meals every day this building must have been a state of the art food preparation facility. Refrigeration was still a new technology and this building was designed with a very large walk in freezer. The kitchen area was also very large and must have been a very busy place. The building had many glass block windows that probably were designed to allow light into the freezer. I remember tracks on the ceiling that held some still remaining meat hooks. The odor in the summer was what you would expect of an old freezer. The 1942 Sanborn map calls this the "service" building. The more recent map refers to it as the Dining and Kitchen building. Meals were delivered to each cottage by a truck. It was a one story building with each end (east and west) having a second story. Not a building I went to very often it did have a cool little room underneath it that I did spend time in.
