Thomas Judd helped to found the Sugar Grove Normal and Industrial School and donated the land.

Thomas Judd built a large boarding house on the site just north of the railroad, on the westerly side of Main Street, as the school attracted students from such distant communities as Waterman, Shabbona and Plainfield, to name a few. The boarding house became known as “Uncle Tom’s Cabin.”
