In November of 1918 a trip via train to a football game in Chicago was arranged for soldiers at Camp Grant in Rockford. The route took the train on the CB&Q line through Sugar Grove, Illinois 9 Nov 1918. On that day the excursion train from Camp Grant collided head on with another train at Sugar Grove near to the depot. There was at least one fatality.
