Day School
Marcus R. Burrowes 1926
This building is one of the original Marcus Burrowes-designed structures, and served as the WCTS's academic schoolhouse, before the Central School replaced it in 1930. This structure (also referred to as the "Research Building") then housed the famed "McGregor Laboratory" on its second floor, where the top scientists employed by Wayne County would conduct their studies. Dr. Thorleif Hegge was the WCTS's Director of Research in those years, and names such as Dr. Alfred Strauss, Dr. Heinz Werner, Dr. Laura Lehtinen, Dr. Newell Kephart, Dr. William Cruickshank, Dr. Bluma Weiner, and Dr. Samuel Kirk were among the names whose work made the WCTS world-famous.
In 1957, Dr. Buoniconto and Dr. Charles Brake opened a new program in this building, called the "Day School." Whether the McGregor Laboratory continued to share the same building is not known.
There are not many pictures of this one. It was engulfed by trees on the north and east sides making pictures difficult. The west side was very close Central School and made it difficult to get a good shot. Its most photogenic side faced south towards the Hospital.
